EXPLORATION - What has gone before...
The Mercury-Redstone was used for the sub-orbital flights made by Alan Shepard (MR-3) on May 5, 1961 and Virgil "Gus" Grissom (MR-4) on July 21, 1961. MR-4 sank after splashdown. On July 20, 1999 Oceaneering International, Inc. recovered the capsule from 1500 feet. The recovery was financed by the Discovery Channel. On board the capsule was fifty-two 1935-1945 "Mercury head" silver dimes.

Richard Kruse has performed an outstanding job in the creation of his Historic Spacecraft website. I will be referencing his work thoughout my EXPLORATION pages.
